Snail Flower

This is the drawing I made for my boyfriend's mom for Christmas. She likes plants, so I decided to draw something related to flowers. Also, we get a lot of snails in our house, so I thought to add a snail shell. So both of these combined, and you get this!
As an interesting aside, the drawing was originally drawn to be in horizontal orientation, but vertical works better so that's how it is.

Workstages

The first step was coming up with what the drawing was gonna be. After some doodling, I've ended up with this flower growing out of a snail shell.

In order to see if my idea of how it should be colored in would be good, I decided to only color in the shell. Since it turned out really nice, this is the style I've chosen to stick with.

Filling in the rest of the drawing with flat colors. It's good to have the base colors down before doing shading.

Time to add some shading! The spirally center of the flower was the most difficult to shade due to its density.

Replacing the crude outlines with outlines that fit more with the shading. Looks a lot nicer!

Adding an abstract sunny background. Yeah, admittedly it would've made more sense to have the shading come from the center of the flower, but I think this works just as well.

After adding some shininess into the background and tweaking the colors a bit, we get the final version of the drawing!
